How to Write a Dating Profile That Actually Gets Responses

How to Write a Dating Profile That Actually Gets Responses

If your dating profile says you love to laugh, enjoy good food, and are looking for someone to go on adventures with, congratulations — you have described approximately four million other people on this platform.

The goal of a dating profile is not to seem appealing to everyone. It is to seem genuinely interesting to the right person. Here is how to actually do that.

Lead with something specific
Generic openers kill profiles. Instead of "I love travelling," try "I have been to 12 countries and my worst trip to Marrakech is somehow also my best story." Specific details create conversation hooks. Vague statements do not.

Show your sense of humour, do not describe it
Writing "I have a great sense of humour" is the equivalent of walking into a room and announcing you are fun. Just be funny. One dry observation about something real in your life will do more for your matches than any self-description.

Be honest about what you actually want
People waste so much energy trying to seem low-maintenance in their profiles and then wonder why they attract people who are not serious. If you are looking for something real and long-term, say so. The right person will respect it. The wrong ones will self-select out, which is exactly what you want.

Choose photos that show you living, not posing
A photo of you at a wedding squinting into the sun tells people nothing. A photo of you mid-laugh at a rooftop bar, or concentrating at a chess board, or covered in paint at an art class tells a story. Stories attract people.

End with an easy conversation starter
Close your bio with something that invites a response. A question, a debate, a bold opinion about something low-stakes. Give people a door to walk through and more of them will.

Your profile is not a CV. It is the beginning of a conversation. Write it like one.

Most dating profiles say the same five things. Here is how to write one that makes people stop scrolling.
